As head of the Racing Committee of Richmond Yacht Club, I welcome all the competitors and
their friends and family to what I know will be a very memorable event.
This club has a special relationship with the Snipe going back to the beginning in 1932.
Just after a club house was built in the muddy flats of the Santa Fe Channel, a rapidly
growing Snipe fleet built a sort of marine railway to facilitate the launching of their boats.
It was crude but it got the job done.
Since then the Snipes have been a large part of the racing scene at RYC, not only bring the
Nationals here in 1995 but helping as volunteers with many other National and International
Regattas.
RYC hosted the International Canoe Worlds in 1993, International 14 Worlds in 1997, Fin Olympic
Trials in 1999 and the Etchells Worlds in 2005 to name a few prestigious events. In 2001 US
Sailing honored us with the Regatta of the Year award.
With these experiences behind us, you can expect the highest caliber of racing for your Nationals.
Del Olsen, an International Canoe sailor who has placed in the Worlds several times, will head up
a qualified team of volunteer race committee.
I myself still race a center board boat, the Byte. There really is nothing better than messing
about in a small boat.
